Freestyle:

Troy and Kathy

By Dick Capello

Kathy and Tory
About Freestyle Classes

Canine Musical Freestyle (aka “dancing with dogs”) blends obedience, rally and agility exercises with tricks and special freestyle “moves” to create unique dog and handler routines synchronized to music. Handlers with dogs of all breeds, mixes and ages will find freestyle training promotes increased attention and precision and creates a strong working relationship with their dogs in a fun and interesting way.

Many aspects of freestyle training enhance training for other dog sports, such as competition obedience, rally, agility and treibball. Freestyle is also a great conditioning program for dogs. While dogs are learning freestyle moves such as spinning, weaving and backing up, they are strengthening muscles that they do not normally use and increasing flexibility. In fact, Dr. Patti Schaefer, who practices canine sports medicine, often recommends similar moves or conditioning exercises for performance dogs.

About The Instructor

Kathy Weaver is a seasoned freestyle competitor and instructor as well as a judge for Paws 2 Dance events. She and her Belgian Tervuren, Troy, recently completed their freestyle championship title. Click here to read more about Kathy.

Beginning Freestyle Class

In the Beginning Freestyle Class we will cover basic “moves” such as heeling on both sides, circling the handler, spinning, backing up, working in front of the handler, weaving and transitioning from one side of the handler to another. We will also work on paw behaviors and simple tricks. We will discuss how to select and edit music and how to use choreography to minimize hand signals. The class will work on a group routine. Emphasis will be on developing attention and precision and having fun with your dog.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Beginning Home Obedience (or equivalent) or instructor approval. Dogs should be able to walk on a loose leash, sit, down and stay. No aggressive dogs. Bring your regular training equipment to the first class, along with lots of small (pea size) food treats and a tug toy.

Intermediate/Advanced Freestyle Class

This ongoing class is for students who are ready to teach their dogs more complicated freestyle moves and start to develop their own routines. Some of the moves we will be working on in this class are heeling behind the handler, using paw behaviors, jumping, backing, side stepping and creating interesting variations out of basic moves. We will combine moves to create eye-catching routines. As students advance in freestyle, we will be working on distance moves and using props. Emphasis will be on training creatively, creating ideal routines for you and your dog while developing an enthusiastic canine dance partner.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of the Beginner Freestyle Class or instructor approval.

Confidence Building:

This class is for dogs with extreme fear issues. Most dogs with minor fears do well in regular classes; however, those dogs with extreme phobias, fear of other dogs or people, will benefit from this slower paced obedience and socialization class. We occasionally offer a special class just for "special needs" dogs and their owners. However, we have found that 99% of the special needs dogs can actually flourish in one of our regular home obedience classes. For dogs over 4 months of age.

Note: Truly "aggressive" dogs (aggressive toward people and/or dogs) may be better suited for a Growl Class or Private Lesson.  If your dog is uncontrollable around other dogs or people, or has a history of biting, please contact us to arrange a private lesson prior to enrolling in a class.

Small Dog Obedience:

small dog
This class is for toy breeds and small dogs. Most small dogs do well in regular classes; however, this class gives extra attention to the special needs of tiny dogs.

For dogs over 4 months of age and under 10 pounds.

Growl Class:

This class is for dogs with aggression towards people and/or other dogs. All dogs will be muzzled in this class, which will be limited to 5 dogs. Obedience exercises, behavior modification and home management will be used to modify the behavior of these dogs. For dogs over 6 months of age.

Field Trips & Special Interest:

Family Dog is always happy to develop classes for specific interest groups. If your scout troop, 4-H group or daughter's birthday party would like a program tailored just for them, we can do it! We have experience creating all kinds of one-time, short and long-term workshops, classes & seminars.

Private Lessons:

The Family Dog staff is always available for private lessons to help with specific issues, such as housebreaking, behavior problems, etc. If you are interested in private lessons then please visit our Private Lessons page for details.
